Why Trust British Berkefeld Water Filtration Systems?
The Berkey® Water Filtration System has become the standard by which all other water filtration systems are measured.  You deserve the freshest, cleanest water possible from the world's most flexible, convenient and superior home and travel water filtration systems.

The Berkey® System's unique design combines the age-old, natural process of micro-porous filtration coupled with modern state-of-the-art technology and the highest quality materials to bring you virtually the finest affordable water filtration system available anywhere.

To use, the upper chamber of the unit is filled with water.  Gravity draws this water through the exclusive British Berkefeld®  ceramic filters,  where it then collects in the lower chamber.

The two piece housing is portable and can be used virtually anywhere, anytime. An easy to turn, on-off spigot is used as the outflow tap.  No electricity, no pressure needed!

The Super Sterasyl™ ceramic filters reduce up to 99.99% of particulates, cysts, parasites and pathogenic bacteria including  E. coli, Cryptosporidium, Giardia and Salmonella typhi. Additionally, these filters will reduce chlorine, rust, sediment and organic chemicals.  Filtration rating efficiencies were greater than 98% for particles down to 0.2 microns in size,   greater than 99.9% down to 0.5 microns, and  greater than 99.99% for particles 0.9 microns (Spectrum Labs).

It takes only minutes to assemble and can provide many gallons of good tasting, sparkling, wholesome drinking water each day. Berkey filtration systems are constructed of  high grade, polished stainless steel making it hygienic, durable and easy to clean.

Berkeys®  are powerful and economical.  The unique ceramic filters are impregnated with pure silver, a natural anti-microbial that kills bacteria it contacts.  What's more, the durable ceramic filters can be cleaned over and over again, as needed, with a soft brush or ScotchBrite pad. See the illustration, below.  It's fast, and it's easy!

An important note from our Director, Geri Guidetti: "If you expect now, or in the future, to have to filter water from a source that has a good deal of suspended sediment, i.e., dirty water or lake water with a lot of suspended algae,  I would strongly recommend the original British Berkefeld ceramic filters over the more porous black filters you will also find, below, on this website. While the latter are excellent water purifiers, the Super Sterasyl Ceramic British Berkefeld white filters are more easily cleaned of sediment and, as a result, are less likely to get bogged down by dirtier water sources which could slow filtration (see illustration, above)."

Sowing the Seeds of Self-Reliance for Forty Years
BerkeyTM  Water  Filters
By British Berkefeld

The Ultimate in Filtration

Healthy: The Berkey water filter is far superior to other filters because, in addition to removing harmful pathogenic bacteria from water, its unique sterasyl ceramic filtering system reduces unhealthy chemical contaminants and impurities while leaving in the essential minerals your body needs.

Worldwide Recognition and History: The Berkey’s high quality and effectiveness have stood the test of time.  First ordered by the Royal House in England, it has also been used by relief organizations such as UNICEF, the Peace Corps and Red Cross Societies internationally.  The Soros Foundation provided 58,000 units to the people of Sarajevo and, in 1998, thousands were shipped to relief organizations in Honduras.  What’s more, British Berkefeld®   systems have been used for over 150 years by missionaries and relief workers in over 140 countries around the world.

Convenient: Berkey water filters assemble in minutes without tools, electricity, water pressure or plumbing.  What’s more, they are simple to operate and maintain.

Economical: The Berkey is easily the most economical water filtration system you can own.  Its unique design allows you to easily remove and clean the filters up to 100 times or more.  Your cost is as low a $1 per month.  Compare that to buying bottled water!

Powerful: Of course the powerful Berkey water filters easily clean ordinary tap water, yet they effectively handle even raw, untreated water from lakes and streams.  A Berkey is the ideal water filtration system to have on hand in the event of a local or national emergency or any disaster such as blackouts, hurricanes, floods and earthquakes—times when tap water or a good, functioning well may not be available. See filter details, below.

Flexible: The Berkey is completely portable, convenient and easy to use, so you can take it anywhere—on vacation, hunting and camping trips, to college dorms or even in your RV or boat.  No electricity required!

Elegant:  The Berkey is made of durable, high grade polished stainless steel.  Its attractive, high quality design makes it a beautiful addition to your kitchen and home.

British Berkefeld Systems FAQs

When and how do I clean the ceramic filter elements?
When the time it takes for the water to filter into the lower chamber substantially decreases. Simply hold the ceramic element under clean running water while scrubbing lightly with a Scotch-Brite pad or soft toothbrush.

Can I reactivate the granular carbon core of each filter once it becomes saturated with chemicals?

Yes.  Place your filter element in a pan of cool water and slowly bring the water up to boiling.  Gently boil for five minutes.  Let cool and place back into the stainless filter canister.

What happens when the carbon becomes exhausted?

You will know if this happens because the taste of chlorine or other unpleasant tastes and odors that were in your water before you bought a British Berkefeld Berkey returns.  In our experience at The Ark Institute, this did not happen for three years, but all water has different levels of chemicals.  Yours may go several years before the carbon core is exhausted. When the carbon is exhausted, the ceramic shell will still remove disease causing bacteria and turbidity, but a new filter would be needed to continue removing bad odors or tastes.

How do I determine when the filter elements must be replaced?

The British company that produces These ceramic filters recommends replacement after 100 cleanings!  Or, if at any time you crack a filter element, then it must be replaced. Most users report that this takes several yearsbut that depends on your water source.

Do British Berkefeld Filtration Systems remove beneficial minerals from water.   No.

How durable is the System?

The exterior is made of high-grade, polished stainless steel, making it rugged enoough to handle camping trips and college dorms, yet elegant enough for any room in your home.

What are the limitations of other water filters and technologies?

Bottled water is often nothing more than city tap water in plastic bottles. Many plastics contain dangerous plasticizers that can leach into water, especially on re-filling.  Many bottled waters have been found to contain bacteria.  Most common carbon filters are not re-cleanable, so have short (and expensive) lifespans.  Most have to be replaced after 40-700 gallons of water filtration.  British Berkefeld systems could filter thousands of gallons. Distilled water is devoid of natural minerals, so could negatively impact bone density with continuous use. Reverse osmosis or RO  removes beneficial minerals; doesn't remove pathogenic bacteria; filter in not recleanable; the reservoir tank can become a breeding ground for bacteria.

How can I tell when to pour more water into the top of my British Berkefeld system?

Lift the top half of the unit and check the water level in the  bottom.  If it is near full, don't add anymore water to the top in order to prevent overflows. Or to keep filtering more water,  remove some of the clean, filtered water from the tap into a clean bottle or pitcher for serving or chilling in the refrigerator.  Then refill the top to produce more.  In this way, you should always have plenty of fresh, clean, healthy water whenever you need it.
